Financial Planner Shares Podcasts For Longer Healthspan In Retirement

3 Mins read

Retirement planning is about more than just accumulating wealth. All the money in the world won’t bring you happiness if you have no way to enjoy it. Likewise, no amount of money can buy you perfect health. However, there are things you can do today to improve your healthspan in retirement; some cost money, and others don’t.

I just had breakfast with a wonderful woman who has been battling breast cancer for most of the past six years. While she maintained a shockingly positive demeanor, what she has gone through regarding treatment, I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy, from surgery to radiation to chemo and all that goes with these treatments. Her life has essentially been on hold for six years.

While money has helped her fight cancer, no amount of money (on its own) would keep her from getting cancer. I don’t even want to think about all the costs associated with her care through the years. She shared a few healthcare tips with me that have helped her build up her immune system and overall health during this difficult time. They all echoed recommendations for a healthier life I’d heard on a few podcasts.

Keep reading as I share three podcasts that you may find helpful and motivating if you’re looking to improve your health. Like compounding interest can help you build vast wealth over time, making small, healthier choices today could also significantly improve your healthspan in retirement.

The Drive Podcast with Peter Attia

You may know Peter Attia as the longevity coach on the Apple
AAPL
TV show “Limitless with Chris Hemsworth” or the author of the bestselling book “Outlive: The Science & Art of Longevity.” You may not know that he also has an informative, long-format podcast dedicated to living a longer and healthier life.

The Peter Attia Drive podcast gives listeners tips and guidance to help maximize their longevity. Attia and his expert guests cover topics related to a person’s physical, cognitive, and emotional health. The goal isn’t just to live a long time; it is to increase your healthspan so you enjoy your life more.

The Genius Life with Max Lugavere

A while back, I’d read Max Lugaveres’s book “The Genius Life: Heal Your Mind, Strengthen Your Body, and Become Extraordinary.” Recently, I stumbled across his podcast after searching for an appearance by one of his guests. With 331 episodes and counting, this podcast covers many topics that can help you improve your life and, perhaps, help you build your own genius life.

Hopefully, with the help of his show, you might be able to develop more healthy habits for a genius retirement.

The Doctor’s Pharmacy – Podcast By Dr. Mark Hyman

I enjoy this podcast as Dr. Mark Hyman takes a functional approach to healthcare. Most of us go to the doctor, and if we don’t have some disease (yet), we keep plugging away with our unhealthy habits. The vast majority of Americans are overfed and undernourished. We are getting plenty of calories but not nearly enough nutrients.

Extra credit: go on a walk and turn on a podcast episode. You can exercise your body and your mind at the same time. Many of the diseases that kill Americans are either preventable or there are steps that greatly reduce the risk of death. Hopefully, your amazing financial planner has helped you develop a retirement plan with an income stream you can’t outlive. Take steps today to enjoy your retirement and have more time (longevity) to enjoy your life’s savings. Healthspan is essentially a wealth of health.

Without enough money to provide shelter and sustenance in retirement, you will have a tough time enjoying your golden years. Likewise, being unhealthy and unable to do the things you dreamed of once you retire will either prohibit or significantly reduce the joy you can receive from your retirement income. Take steps today to have both a healthier and wealthier retirement.
