Live news: US jobless claims fall more than forecast to 3-week low

Events to look out for in North America today include UPS earnings, US new home sales and jobless claims. 

UPS: The US delivery group is forecast to report improved net income in the three months to the end of September as the company is expected to benefit from improving volumes and cost-cutting measures.

Other companies: Honeywell, Northrop Grumman, S&P Global, Keurig Dr Pepper, Nasdaq, Valero Energy Corporation, Hasbro, Harley-Davidson, American Airlines, and Southwest Airlines will report earnings before the bell. 

New home sales: Sales of newbuilds in the US are forecast to have increased in September to an annualised rate of 720,000 from 716,000 in August. 

Jobless claims: New applications for unemployment aid are forecast to have risen to 242,000 claims in the week ending October 19, compared with 241,000 claims in the previous week. 

Antony Blinken: The US secretary of state will meet the Qatari emir, prime minister and foreign minister in Doha, the last stop of his Middle East trip before he travels to the UK. 

US election: Donald Trump will hold a rally in Tempe, Arizona. Meanwhile, Barack Obama will join vice-president Kamala Harris for a rally in Atlanta that will feature rock star Bruce Springsteen.
